Symptoms , Causes and Home Remedies for Burning Tongue

Burning tongue popularly called Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a constant sensation of pain, itching and burn in the tongue. It is also known as a glossodynia, stomatodynia, scalded mouth syndrome, burning lips and tongue syndrome. This type of syndrome basically affects the gums, tongue, lips, below the mouth, inside the cheeks and other mouth areas.

An affected person loses his taste sense for some time, though it does not cause much effect on the taste buds but if the problem continues for long time then it can lead to chronic condition. In chronic condition, the teeth, gums and also the lips also start feeling burning sensation. Therefore, it is essential to cure the condition of burning mouth as early as possible with herbal treatments.

Causes:

  • Yeast infection
  • Hormonal abnormality or deficiency
  • Diabetes
  • Medicines  like diuretics, oral diabetic medicines and  some blood pressure medicines
  • Abnormalities  in Blood  such as Anemia and Dyscrasias
  • Endocrine disorders
  • Malnutrition (especially B-12 vitamin , niacin, folic acid and iron)
  • Allergies
  • Dental diseases
  • Gastric acid
  • Psychological factors
  • Inflammatory disorder
  • Use of Tobacco


Symptoms:

  • Burn sensation affecting lips ,tongue,  gums, throat ,palate or whole mouth
  • A tingling sensation in tongue tip or mouth
  • Pain in Mouth
  • Increased thirst
  • Dry and Sore mouth
  • Change of Taste

Home Remedies:

  • To suck on an ice piece. It works effectively while treating the affected area.
  • Intake of larger quantity of water helps to keep mouth moist.
  • Increase the Vitamin rich food consumption (rich in B vitamin such as bananas, potatoes, lentils, chili peppers, nutritional yeast and molasses.
  • Application of glycerin on the burned part of the tongue. It gives a sensation of cooling thereby relieves the pain of burn..
  • Intake of the large amount of honey with milk.
  • Take lots of boiled food and vegetables.
  • Lavender oil works well to cure affected tongue and also promotes the circulation of blood.
  • Addition of iron rich food such as spinach, broccoli and parsley to the diet helps in treating burned portion of the tongue as it increases the formation of new red blood cells by replacing damaged ones.
  • Excess intake of vegetable juice and fresh fruit juice, this provides main nutrients to the body.

In addition to these remedies, the right kind of diet also essential for the person suffered from burning tongue. Burning tongue is seen mostly in the people of middle aged or women after puberty stage. It is also recommended to avoid oral and foods products that cause more allergies and can aggravate the burning condition.
