How to Treat Halistosis or Breathe Odor?

Discomfort in interpersonal relationship caused by unpleasant odor exhaled on the breath causing is termed as Halistosis. It is widely referred as bad breath, morning breath etc. It happens primarily due to consumption of garlic and onion rich foods.

Onion rich foods as well as garlic rich foods get absorbed into our bloodstream. This blood stream transfers them to the lungs and when exhaled it acts like an odor. Even food particles trapped in the oral cavity or mouth becomes the origin point for bacteria that causes the problem.

Poor oral hygiene, periodontal diseases, smoking and other tobacco products, as well as improper cleaning of dentures are also responsible in facilitating the problem.

To counter the problem brushing the teeth and rinsing the mouth thoroughly after meal is advisable. This facilitates removable of food particle from the mouth. Bacteria are trapped in the tongue that is why it is essential to brush it along with the teeth.

Saliva is a natural mouthwash. Chewing sugarless gum increases the secretion of saliva. Drinking plenty of water along with the practice of swooshing it around in the mouth loosens the food material stuck inside mouth.

Breath mints along with mouthwashes that contain alcohol must be avoided. Similarly alcohol beverages and coffee consumption should be avoided as these dries the mouth and facilitate the growth of bacteria.

For smokers it is advisable to quit smoking as it dries up the mouth too. Chlorophyll must be taken as it acts as a natural breath freshener and is present in green vegetables.

Peppermint oil or tea tree oil applied to the tongue or used with toothbrush help freshen the breath. These two has antibacterial properties along with the above stated attribute.

As per the traditional therapy, it is widely accepted that baking soda maintains the good oral hygiene.

Swooshing hydrogen peroxide and water inside the mouth is highly effective in killing bacteria causing halitosis.
