Growth of edges in the toenail that pushes itself inside the skin and soft tissues adjacent to nails is commonly referred as Ingrown toenail disorder. Initial stages of this disorder show no symptoms but in later stage it becomes painful. In many cases it leads to septic thereby requires medication.
However they are surprisingly more preventable. The best way to avoid this disorder is not to trim the nails too short. Regular cutting and trimming of toenails avoids the disorder to originate. Keeping the nails in a square shape instead of rounding it helps curtailing the growth of nails into the surrounding tissue.
It is advisable to avoid toe pinching shoes and tight toes generally lead to nail problems. Filling up the basin or tub with warm water with salt and then soaking the affected foot, facilitates the nail to grow out. Hygienic food conditions are essential to be maintained to avoid the complications.
Bandaging the nail with piece of fresh onion on the nail is an effective method to counter the problem. It is also advisable to dip bandage in warm salt water for duration of quarter hour loosens the affected area and allows trimming the ingrown nails.
In case of diet, it is advisable to subsidize the intake of sugar rich foods. Sugar makes cuticle weak that borders the toenail. Weak cuticle is prone to inflammation.
Using a cotton ball in a stick pushed under the nail in the ingrown area helps the nail to get slightly elevated. This does not allow the cutting of the adjacent cuticle giving the skin the ample time to heal.
Keeping the toe dry all the time is widely accepted preventive measure. Adding the lavender or tea tree oil to the foot soak is highly preferred method of getting relief from the disorder.
Lemons are also useful to treat the disorder as it is highly helpful in softening the skin as well as healing the same. Epsom salt water (lukewarm) is used to soak the affected area for half-n-hour for treating the disorder. Application of Hydrogen peroxide is also prescribed as it acts as mild antiseptic suited mostly for minor infections. It can be however substituted with iodine also.
Avoiding high heeled shoes and colored socks subsidizes the further complications. It is highly advisable to allow free flow of air as it will curtain the bacteria from growing into the affected skin.
