Selection of cigars is a matter of personal choice. Like other personal preferences it also differs significantly. Normally, a smoker will choose a cigar that suits his taste. There are numerous types, shapes, brands, tastes and colors of cigars. This combination of features can keep a smoker constantly busy in making his selection. To overcome the problem of choice, you need to try as many cigars as possible to find the absolute match.
Wrappers reflect different flavors. Light shaded wrappers hold more mild flavored cigars where as dark shaded wrappers hold the robust ones. New smokers tend to like mild or medium sized cigars while old smokers prefer strong cigars. Similarly, there are different flavored cigars with distinct shaded wrappers. The wrappers should be wrapped smoothly. In case of any cracks or discolorations, ignore it as these reflect the lower quality.
Next, cigars come in varied sizes. Its length is measured in inches and ring gauge which refers to the diameter of a cigar. Diameter increments are also measured in inches (1/64). Sizes are printed on cigar wrappers as ‘length * ring gauge’. Some cigars represent brand based size descriptions which are not exact measurements.
Inspect a cigar’s texture carefully. Squeeze it gently to find if it is either too soft or too hard. A good cigar would normally give a little. Check for lumps by gently squeezing it as quality cigars have a consistent texture.
Then, look for tobacco quality. You can check by inspecting the end from where the cigar is to be lit. It might be difficult for beginners but experts can easily recognize the quality by tobacco’s color. Finding any abrupt changes in color indicates that the tobacco leaves were not properly laid down. Prefer selecting a cigar which reflects smooth blend of tobacco.
Cigars with larger ring size are considered better and produce more smoke. Larger rings enable cigar manufacturers to blend various types of leaves to enhance the smoking experience. New smokers should consider small cigars and then gradually move towards bigger ones. Also consider the time you give yourself to smoke. Bigger cigars can take over an hour to complete. So, don’t rush with big cigars rather give yourself enough time to enjoy smoking.
Even experienced smokers don’t always stick to one type or flavor. There are special occasion cigars that can be enjoyed from time to time. Also, regular smokers keep rotating their flavors and sizes. One simply cannot ignore many for just one. Sampler cigars are very good for novice smokers that offer distinct styles and brands at a minimal cost. Cigars are now sold on the internet too which has just extended the reach of smokers beyond market availability.
