Myopia or nearsightedness is a vision disorder that is corrected by spectacles, contact lenses and even surgery. In this case, a person finds difficulty in observing distant objects. However, the patient can clearly see nearby things. For this reason, the sufferer faces acute problems in reading highway signs that can lead to severe accidents.

Here the sufferer has a refractive error where the light rays incorrectly bend into his eyes to transmit images to the brain. In this, eyeball is either very long or the cornea is over curved that blurs your vision focus forming image in front of the retina and not on the retina.  It is usually common in children that at times get worsened with age.

Symptoms of Myopia are:

One who suffers from myopia repeatedly complains of eyestrain, headaches and dizziness that the affected person feels while playing sports, driving or looking at distant objects.

How can you diagnose this condition?

This condition can be easily identified with the help of standard eye exams given by an ophthalmologist.

Myopia Treatments

Its treatment involves the usage of eyeglasses, contact lenses and refractive surgery. People who are nearsighted are recommended glasses or contact lenses having a power of -3.00. As the number increases your lenses get stronger.

Refractive surgery can completely free you from glasses.  Other myopia surgeries are performed with the help of laser besides, the following:

Photorefractive keratectomy also referred as PRK: In this, a laser is used to flatten the cornea removing a layer of corneal tissue that will allow light rays to focus closer to the retina.

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis or LASIK: A laser is used to remove some corneal tissue cutting a flap through the top of the cornea. The flap is dropped back into place after it is done. It is the most common surgery prescribed to correct nearsightedness.

Corneal rings: Intacs or plastic corneal rings are implanted into the eye to change the shape of the cornea. However, further modifications are done only after doctor’s prescription.
