You can have swollen hands for a variety of reasons. Side effects of medications, allergies, obesity, pregnancy and sodium retention can cause swollen hands. Apart from it, hormone therapy and nutritional imbalance in the body are also some of the reasons for swollen hands. The cause of the swelling should be ascertained before any treatment is applied. Chronic swelling should not be ignored and should be analyzed by a doctor at the earliest. In between, you can reduce the swelling by doing various things.

  •   Get your hands massaged by a friend or loved one. This is a good therapy to increase blood circulation in the hands and the circulation of excess fluids away from the area.
  •  The toxins flushing out of your system help reduce the swelling in your extremities and water is the best way to eliminate these toxins so try and drink minimum 64 ounces of water daily.
  •  Putting ice on the swollen areas helps reduce the swelling. The affected area should be treated with ice every 10 minutes for three times breaking it for 10 minutes each time.
  •   Having elevated your hands higher than the rest of the arms also helps. For this, your hands should be rest on a pile of a few pillows.
  •   Put on support gloves. These compression gloves or hose as they are sometimes called help eliminating the swelling by encouraging circulation in the hands.
  •   You will be better off avoiding excess caffeine, salt and alcohol as these aggravate the condition.
  •  Incorporating exercise in your day-to-day routine is also believed to reduce the swelling in the hands.
  •  To have a proper-functioning body system, it is necessary to eat a nutritional and well-balanced diet in which lots of green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits should be included. A healthy diet has been shown to keep the swelling off.
