When cells grow outside the uterus excessively then it’s scientifically known as Endometriosis. It is just like endometrial cells that develop inside the uterus and shed during menstruation. Here the endometrial cells attach to tissues outside the uterus and are called endometriosis implants.
These are common in the areas of the vagina, cervix, bladder and even pelvis. However, it rarely occurs outside the pelvis, liver, mature scars and around lungs or brain. These endometrial implants are benign and not cancerous. It is very common in the reproductive years of women. Although the exact occurrence of endometriosis is still unidentified as many women have this without any symptoms.
Over one million women in the United States frequently suffer from this affliction. It is the primary cause of pelvic pain and reason for laparoscopic as well as hysterectomy all over America. Certain cases of endometriosis are diagnosed easily in 25 to 35 year old women. This can occur in young girls. However, it affects less in postmenopausal women. Studies also reveal that it is found more in American Women than the one living in Africa and Asia. It is also shows that it occurs more in thin, tall females whose body mass index is excessively low. In some cases, delaying pregnancy for longer time can trigger its occurrences.
There are many treatments for endometriosis but, following points which one must consider before undergoing any one of them. These symptoms include:
- Intensity and severity of the symptoms
- Types of symptoms
- Patient’s age
- Ask the patient if she desires to get pregnant or not
- Duration of treatment
- Side-effects of drug treatment
- Cost of the treatment
On the basis of the severity of the disease following treatment are recommended that consists of :
- Surveillance with no medical intrusion
- Treatment of Hormone
- Surgical procedure
- Combined treatment
