Among a number of sources you can burn your skin from some are chemicals, hot liquids, electricity, steam, the sun, the fire and hot objects. For the purpose of diagnosis and treatment, burns are classified in the following three categories:

First Degree Burn: this is not so severe a burn and only involves the epidermis, the outer layer of skin. Sunburns come in the category of first degree burns. When one is so burnt, one’s skin is painful and red.

Second Degree Burn: The second degree burns involves the epidermis and the second layer of dermis or skin. These burns result in blisters and swelling and cause you more pain as compared to first degree burns.

Third Degree Burns: These are the most severe kind of burns. All the skin layers are burnt through and the underlying tissue is affected from the burn as well since all the nerves are destroyed. The skin often turns brown, black or white and is leathery and dry. These burns are painless.

One should care for all types of burns whether minor or major so that no scarring or infection occurs. The individuals affected from severe burns on neck, genitals and face should be immediately taken to emergency room.

Mild to moderate burn can be given a first aid at home:

The burns should be submersed in cold water or cold compresses should be applied immediately after you’ve got burnt to relieve some of the swelling and pain.

  1. Avoid putting ice directly against the burn as the direct contact can cause frostbite and do more damage.
  2. The clothes soaked in hot water or oil should be cut off.
  3. The clothes burned into the skin should not be removed on you own; take the help of medical professional.
  4. The jewelry on the burnt body or shoes on the burnt feet should be removed.
  5. Never apply butter on the burnt area since it can cause more damage by trapping the heat in the damaged tissues and develop an infection.
  6. Sometimes your body produces blisters to prevent infection. If it happens, remember never to break these and when broken on their own, they should be washed with plain soap and water, dried, applied with an antibiotic ointment and wrapped in a sterile gauge bandage.
  7. take over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen.
  8. Ensure the wound is wrapped loosely to avoid putting too much pressure on the burnt area.
  9. make the person with burns, if it’s not an emergency case, sip on cool water but if the suffering individual is being rushed to the hospital (s) he should not be given anything to drink.
