A bulging or swelling of the tongue is called Swollen Tongue. A swelling tongue must be taken very seriously because it can also spread towards, back and throat. In some cases, it could completely or partially blocks the air passage which may result into patient death because of an intense breathing problem.
A Swollen tongue can occur due to several reasons starting from a simple infection to a symptom for tumor or hyperthyroidism. It can also cause by a hereditary problem called hereditary angioedema. Other causes of the tongue swelling include an allergy (or food allergy), common symptom include– hives, vomiting, swelling of the face or intense itching.
Other causes that triggers tongue swelling are environmental factors such as physical wound on tongue or change in temperature. Symptoms in angioedema not only include swell up and painful or itchy situation but red rashes found around the lips and eyes, some discolored skin patches, rashes also found in a portion like feet, genitals and hands.

- Celery sticks- It provides relief from swollen tongue as it contains high water quantities. It is also boosting salivary glands and relaxing tongue.
- Turmeric- The paste of turmeric and glass of warm by gargling can get a person relief from swelling and inflammation of the ailment. This is a safe way to get rid of a swollen tongue.
- Ice cubes- If a person put some ice-fragments in a mouth for few minutes. The freezing ice temperature helps in reducing the tongue swelling.
- Soft Foods- Switching to semi-solid or soft food can also reduce the swelling of the tongue. Some food such as butter, stew, yoghurt, broths can make you feel relaxing in the situation when a person facing difficulties in chewing foods.
- Fennel seeds- The seeds when mixed with aniseeds act as a soothing mouthwash to remove the bad breath, calm the tongue and boosts salivary glands.
- Avoid salt foods- A person with swollen tongue must avoid salty and sour foods, as it may trigger the saliva production. It can increase the difficulty of a person in swallowing saliva and chewing foods.
- Aniseed mixture- Soak rosemary, mint leaves and aniseed in a water filled bowl. The mixture when used as a mouthwash helps in calming the tongue inflammation. Aniseed sweetens the breath while rosemary will fight with germs like germicide.
The above mentioned natural remedies if one will follow properly can get rid of disease easily without having to go to the doctor’s chambers.
